Onion Gravy for British Bangers and Mash

Description

This tasty onion gravy is made from scratch with caramelized onions, broth, and red wine; perfect with mashed potatoes and your favorite bangers.

Ingredients

6 tablespoons butter
3 medium onions, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 (14 1/2 ounce) can chicken stock
1/2 cup red wine
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Directions

1 Gather all ingredients.
2 Melt butter in a heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat. Add onion; cook and stir until softened, about 10 minutes.
3 Reduce heat to low; cover, and cook until onions are caramelized, stirring occasionally, about 20 minutes.
4 Stir in flour until well mixed.
5 Stir in chicken stock, red wine, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce; simmer until sauce is thickened, stirring frequently, about 15 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
